The word psyche means the human soul, mind or self. Each essay reflects on an aspect of scuba diving and connects to the psychology of the human mind. The author (a psychologist) draws on personal experiences of scuba diving: from a try-dive in Australia all through professional guiding and teaching experiences in Scotland and England. In reading this book, you are encouraged to reflect on your own experiences and discover your own ideas about yourself as a scuba diving. You will also come across the practical applications of psychology to help us as divers. For example, how psychology can help after a dive goes wrong, and influence scuba training to prevent such incidents. Also lots on enhancing the experience of learning to dive with ways to address common issues such as difficulty with mask skills. Unlike many other books and manuals, scubapsyche is not intended to instruct you in "the right way", but rather to share insights and knowledge for you to explore for yourself. Dr Laura Walton
I am a Clinical Psychologist and Scuba Diving instructor. My first dive was a very reluctant dip on the Great Barrier reef. I immediately noticed that my knowledge of psychology would help me to descend. Then, like most divers, I was in awe of the world I found beneath the surface. I also noticed the impact on my mind and how, in diving, we learn about psychology. Diving experiences leave me with lots of insights about psychology, the underwater world and scuba diving itself. I wanted a way to explore and record the ideas that I was curious about, so I wrote these essays to sort out my thoughts share with other scuba divers. I know that other people share this curiosity in discovering themselves through scuba diving. I share these essays as a way to encourage exploration and stimulate reflection on your own experiences.
